Consider: If there are two buttons in front of me, one resulting in 3^^^^3 tortures and the other resulting in 3^^^^3 years of happy, exciting, meaningful and fun human lives, I would like to press the second button. But imagine if next to the buttons there were an indestructible locked box with infinite negative utility in it, and that I couldn’t do anything about it. Would this box suddenly make my choice between the buttons futile? I do not think so, because I care about the utility regardless of what’s in that box.”
